Getting Students Involved in the Electoral Process!
Collier County, FL—September 20, 2013: The Collier County Supervisor of Elections Office has been challenging local high schools to get students registered for the upcoming 2014 and 2016 election cycles. So far the response has been overwhelmingly positive!
The Supervisor of Elections Office is hosting their First Annual High School Voter Registration which takes place between September 17 and September 27 in celebration of Constitution Week and National Voter Registration Day. To date, the following schools have turned in approximately 517 voter registrations to the Supervisor of Elections Office: St. John Neumann, Immokalee High School, Palmetto Ridge High School, Lely High School, and Lorenzo Walker Technical High School.
Over the course of the next week, the Supervisor of Elections Office will visit Naples High School on September 23; Golden Gate High School, Community School of Naples, and Barron Collier High on September 25; and Gulf Coast High School on September 26.
The high school with the highest percentage of students who turn in a registration form after their registration drive will win public recognition and will be presented with a plaque from Jennifer J. Edwards, Supervisor of Elections.
In order to register to vote, residents must be a legal US citizen and must be at least 18 years old. Students under 18 are eligible to pre-register to vote as early as the age of 16, which will prepare them for future elections.
The Collier County Supervisor of Elections Office continues to strengthen its partnerships with local schools and engage students in the democratic process by providing educational programs, conducting voter registration drives, and participating in other events that familiarize students with voting and the electoral process.
